Hi, I need serious help. I have a 2013 Subaru Outback that since I bought it, has had a rhythmic humming noise/vibration when at highway speeds (55-70). Sounds like a hum, hum, hum once per second. Vibration doesn’t shake the wheel, but you can feel it in the floorboards. Rhythm gets faster when driving around a curve to the left, quieter when curving to the right. I’ve taken it to several shops (including a Subaru dealer) and was told it is not the wheel bearings and those are fine. They told me it was because the tires were cupped and new tires would fix it, but getting new tires did not fix

I am not sure why Toyota decided to set the front bumper quite low compared to other similar sized sedans from different brands out there. In the almost 4 years since I've owned this car I have had multiple scratches and scrapes on the underside of the front bumper; it's ridiculous. A very small dip in the road most of the time leads to scratches which I can feel while driving. The only way to not feel this scraping sound is to approach the dip extremely slow at around 5 mph, which is a safety concern because I don't want anyone ramming into my car from behind. Certain roads I need to pass whe

I've had this weird issue that has started happening since I switched back to summer tires this weekend that wasn't there last summer/winter. My car fights back when braking, but appears to pick a random side. I drove on the same road and braked at the same-ish spot and my car decided to tug in both directions. At first, I thought this would be tire pressure, but when it happened to tug on the other side, I was convinced it wasn't. (After checking pressure, it wasn't) Could this be my alignment or balancing? These are brand new tires on brand new wheels. It's also the transition between season

An outer tie rod is bound (screwed into) the inner tie rod as described in this previous posting. WD40 was sprayed at connection between the two tie rods and the jam nut was loosened. Attempts to unscrew the outer rod were unsuccessful. Is WD40 a good penetrant or is it merely a lubricant and I need to use another product? I am open to suggestions.

Similar problem to Steering wheel “center” different from vehicle “straight” , except: In my case there's no obvious cause, it just happened one day, so the "take it back to the shop" answer isn't an option for me I'm primarily interested in how to identify and diagnose what's going on For a little while, my steering wheel has been off by about 10 degrees. To drive straight, the steering wheel is positioned almost 10 degrees to the right; if I straighten the car, the wheels point so as to turn slightly left. It's perfectly steady in its (wrong) position and otherwise behaves as normal. I'm not

I was told that I should leave my wheels straight when I park my car on flat driveway, I think this is rubbish and it doesn't matter personally Should I leave my wheels straight when I'm parked? What about when I stop the engine, and then turn the wheel to engage the steering lock?

During the summer months when temperatures were extreme, my car suddenly had that infamous orange triangle light up and a warning about the tire pressure. I had to avoid taking the freeway home and instead had to take a 30-minute long trek home along the streets. When I went to inspect my tires I saw several large bulges along the sides of multiple tires, especially the front two tires. I immediately took them to the nearest reputable tire shop and they told me that most likely a nail may have caused the issue, but they did not find a single nail nor any holes in the tire that may have been le

I just had a 4 wheel alignment done on a vehicle. While taking it for a test drive, I noticed that the steering wheel is not quite centered for the vehicle to drive straight. It's not pulling in either direction on it's own; it's just that "straight" for the vehicle is not exactly the same as "centered" for the steering wheel. I don't know whether or not it was like that before the alignment was done. Given that the vehicle is not pulling to either side, is this an alignment issue, or purely an issue with the steering wheel? Is it easily correctable?

The nuts at the knuckle on my outer tie rod ends are castle nuts, which are locked by cotter pins fed through holes in the studs. The nuts also have a torque spec (27.0±2.5 N∙m, in this case). If I tighten them down to the midpoint of that spec, the holes and the crenellations may or may not align such that I can get the pin through. It's possible to rotate the stud, since its base is a ball joint, but that requires removing the nut completely so that the stud can be popped out of the knuckle again. That's likely to require repeated attempts and be an utter pain. Is the correct procedure here

So my car has been overheating for over 1 year. It overheated during summer or when I went 80mph only. I recently saved up enough money to get the car fixed. I brought it to my mechanic and informed him of how long it was overheating for. He replaced the water pump, thermostat and radiator and timing belt and a few gaskets. He said he test the head gaskets several times and said it came back negative as being blown. So he did not replace the head gasket and I don't think he visually inspected it. The car drove good for one day then it ran awful. I brought it back and sure enough a spark plug w

Yesterday I bumped into a curb and my tire has sidewall damage. Is this tire safe to drive on? or do I need to replace this tire?

Somehow I was lucky enough to hit something when going downhill. And now my tire looks like in the picture. So should I still drive with this tire or get it replace immediately? And to replace it, is it safe to drive to the tire shop, which is a few miles away?

I have a 2016 Subaru Forester with a persistent “passenger airbag off” message and an illuminated airbag light on the instrument cluster. My current code reader doesn’t have the capacity to read any codes associated with that system, so any advice about an affordable code reader that would work for this particular problem would be welcome. I love buying new toys but affordability is always an issue. Ideas? I’ve tried resetting the light by disconnecting the battery for a few hours but that didn’t seem to accomplish much. There was a recall on the harness that was completed in 2021, but I don’t

I have a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX, but I suspect my question can be generalized to apply to many smaller cars. Not being a fan of donut spare tires, when I replaced my tires about a year ago I kept the one that was in the best shape, mounted on a used steel rim that the shop sold me for cheap. Much to my chagrin, the now full-sized spare does not fit in the well designed for the donut, so it's taking up space in my trunk (and sliding around a bit despite the bungees). I have researched kits for mounting the tire, but haven't found anything suitable for my car. Is there any solution so I can hav

I want to purchase a VW Ameo Highline. It comes with stock tyres (185/60 R15), and alloy rims. The spare wheel, however, is a standard steel rim (non-alloy) with 175/70 R14 tyres. The dealer explained this to me as an international norm, that a spare wheel is to be sparingly used. It made sense to me but I had never heard this before. Do all cars that come factory fitted with alloys follow this rule?

I've seen photographs of cars with strange inclined tires like the one in the picture I pasted here. They seems to be Japanese cars. Is it for drifting? Maybe for appearance? Do the tires get injuries?

My cooling system is quite nasty and needs a flush. I followed instructions on radiator flush, which said to run the car no more than an hour. However few tutorial videos online suggest running radiator flush for few hundred kilometers. Understandably bottle instructions are more reliable source to follow but what happens when you run it for too long?

Witnessed a recent debate about what is the appropriate temperature to check tire pressure at. The debate centered around warm or cold, there wasn't an exact temperature given by any of the parties. What is the appropriate time to take your tire pressure and fill your tires? When they are warm or when they are cold? Why should tire pressure be taken at that particular time of warm or cold?

I bought a new car back in June this year and the car comes with summer performance tires. I live in Minnesota and now it's December, so I really want to get snow tires installed instead of driving in summer tires (since I've read that this may damage the treads). So my question: is it a good idea to keep the summer tires I have and buy new snow tires and mount them for now and when the winter is over, put those summer tires back on? I know nothing about mounting tires, so I'm concerned that changing tires every year would damage the wheels.

Are there any mechanical / safety issues arise when you do not put trims on car tires? Even when using the car in winter temperatures? (Say -15C to -20C)

In critical applications tires are inflated using pure nitrogen ( link ). But carbon dioxide (CO2) is a larger molecule (will leak slower from the tire), as well as inert (will not oxidize rim and will not combust in case of an accident). ( link ) Also, from the ideal gas law , pressure is proportional to the density, individual gas constant and temperature. Assuming constant volume (i.e. P ∝ R*T), any change in temperature is "amplified" by the individual gas constant. And the gas constant is in favor of CO2: R(CO2) < R(O2) < R(N2) . ( ref ) So CO2 seems to give better pressure s

I measured the PSI on my rear driver tire (using a gauge pin - push it into the needle and a stick pops out with a reading), and I got a reading of 22 PSI. My tires are supposed to be anywhere from 30-34 PSI. The thing is, the rear driver tire (the tire in question) doesn't look flat at all. It looks just as good, if not better than the other tires. Should I fill the tire with air? I don't want to over-inflate the tire, if my gauge is giving me a bad reading. However, at the same time, the gauge seems to be working fine for the other tires, so one would be reasonable to assume that it's workin
