Is planning a regular rotation of new tyres over their lifespan a good or bad plan? From many posts I've seen here and elsewhere on the web, motorists in the USA seem to see rotating tires as a task which ought to be undertaken at regular intervals. By rotating tires, I mean moving their position on the vehicle, so moving them from the front to rear axle for example. In the UK, we seldom do this. Indeed one of the biggest tyre fitters in the country actually advises against the practice (see link here ) I've just fitted a set of four tyres to our 2012 VW Golf and wondered if it is worth rotati

I have a 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Wagon. I just destroyed the passenger-side rear tire. The tires have approx. 6/32" tread remaining, per an informal measurement with a coin (I used this guideline from tirerack.com ) These are Nokian tires, and according to the specs I found online, they have 11/32" tread depth when new. Another article on tirerack.com on this topic , suggests that Subuaru states that the differential among tread depth should vary no more than 2/32" My owner's manual does not specify the what difference in tread depth tolerance is, however they do point out that I have a dashbo

Hi, I have Acura RDX 2015 model. Since I moved from Seattle to Kansas City, based on different temperature (which swings from 20 to near 100), I keep seeing different alert for tire pressure. My daily commute is around 50 miles. Please see these two pictures in this link, which were taken just couple of days away - Imgur: The magic of the Internet What TP should I keep ideally which would be okay for cold as well as hot weather? Please advice. Thanks

I bought some Michelin crossclimate2 tires today, went to the auto parts store for new wiper blades and the guy was in awe of the tires. He said they are great for the rims on my 2017 rav4, and they bubble on the bottom for more traction and a smoother ride. What warranty did you get. I said I do not know, but I am putting maybe 4k miles a year. I am not really worried about mileage as dry rot has been killing tires before mileage. He said I should have gone to Costco, better warranty, the shop I bought them from will rotate them every 5k miles for free, no road hazard.

I park in a private lot. A tower has a concession to boot offending cars. He booted my pickup yesterday, the reason on the tag is ‘immobile’. Of course it was immobile: it was parked. All the other cars in the lot were immobile too. There is no rule against immobility. I suspect he meant inoperable, which there is a rule against. Of course my pickup is operable. I maintain it regularly. I only go on short trips anymore and I have a favorite parking place, so you can’t really tell, if you show up once a day, whether I’ve driven it. I keep it clean, it has new tires, which I keep inflated. The e

As mentioned in an unrelated thread, the clutch cylinder is leaking on my 2000 S10 4.3L. This is one of those things that can be managed by carrying a bottle of brake fluid and topping off when needed. I am debating about keeping this truck long term so wasn’t wanting to spend $1000 to have the entire clutch replaced. Unfortunately the cylinder is in the bell housing so the engine and transmission have to come apart and at that time you just replace the entire clutch set. This seems to be more of a problem in cooler temps. Is there any kind of product that could slow down or stop this for a bi

I bought a cheapie tire gague a few years ago, one of those pencil types, and it’s acting nutty, giving me a super-high PSI followed by a more normal PSI (36 is what’s recommended.) I’m unemployed so I’m watching every nickel & dime. Can my pencil gague be prepared some way? (Probably not.) Can someone recommend a low-price tire gague? There’s way too many on the market for my tastes. (But what do I know?) Thanks.

Why are all the new cars going for skinny tires? They are less safe (more likely to come off the rim) and cause a harsh ride. Is this a fashion thing, like short skirts, that we can hope will go away?

THREE SEPARATE TIMES IN LESS THAN 20,000 MILES, THERE WAS A BUBBLE ON THE SIDE OF OUR TIRE WHICH HAD TO BE REPLACED!!!! IN 50 PLUS YEARS OF DRIVING, WE NEVER HAD A BUBBLE ON THE SIDE OF A TIRE, WHICH NEEDED EACH TIME TO BE REPLACED LEST WE HAVE A BLOWOUT. THE SERVICE MANAGER DURING ONE OF OUR REPLACEMENTS TOLD US THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY TOYOTA PROVIDING INADEQUATE PROTECTION FOR THE WHEELS. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION WHICH WILL LEAD TO BLOWOUTS AND DEATHS UNLESS THE NHTSA TAKES IMMEDIATE ACTION. THE SERVICE MANAGER, SPEAKING CONFIDENTIALLY. TOLD US THAT TOYOTA WILL FIGHT THIS R

2014 Acura TSX, 4 Cylinder, AT, 150k miles I noticed a knocking sound when turning the steering wheel a few degrees in one direction, and then turning it in the other direction, while driving the car. I got the car up in the air. Without taking apart anything I grabbed hold of one of the front tires at the 3 and 9 o clock position, and begin to rotate the tire and heard a loud knocking sound. Thinking that it was just the wheel lock, I put the key in the accessory position, car on but engine off. I then repeated the turning of the tire but heard a loud grinding sound. This was repeatable on bo

2017 Chevy Colorado. So the low tire pressure warning lights up on my dash and I get the message to “service tire monitoring system”. I check the tire pressure screen and one of my tires is no longer registering (even though it is at full pressure). I think to myself, I will just get that TPMS sensor replaced next time I rotate the tires. Well…about a week goes by and I check the tire pressure screen again and now two of my tires are not registering. I have tried relearning both of the tires with the TPMS tool and that does not work. I also checked for any error codes and my truck is not throw

TMPS light -not the horse shoe symbol- came on several times, even when tires were 35-37 not low . I was due for new tires, so I got new ones. The sensors & air pressure checked out fine each time I had it checked at America’s tire. I see the Hyundai - Technical Service Bulletin 08-SS-010 - TPMS (TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM) SENSOR MODE SETTING link but link does not work. Any advice if it is a known problem?

My Pilot is lighting up a catalytic converter code on the dashboard. My Boch Honda dealer service is quoting $1,037 for the replacement part and more than $600 for the labor. Does that make any sense? The car has 180,000 miles on it. Should I just go with non-Honda parts?

My 2005 Buick Century with 353k miles gets a recurring P0420 code, catalytic converter operating below efficiency level. Twice this year, I tried using Cataclean, but with no success. I noticed a small hole in my muffler at the seam. Could a lack of exhaust back pressure cause the CC to operate inefficiently or improperly? Can anyone recommend a catalytic converter cleaner? Or, is it all snake oil?

WHEN ACCELERATING FROM DEAD STOP IN A RIGHT HAND TURN UP-HILL CAR IS SLOW TO MOVE FORWARD REQUIRING MORE PRESSURE ON GAS PEDAL, THEN TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO BE HUNTING FOR RIGHT GEAR CAUSING A JERKY MOTION.

I have a 2005 Camry that I don’t plan on driving much. First time I have had to consider time recommendations over mileage. Should all time constrained maintenance, such as changing your oil once every 6 months (even if you don’t go 5000 miles in that time) be strictly followed? Opinions seem to vary from person to person. I can see how if you just let your car sit, that it could cause some problems. But I figured if I start it monthly and get up to operating temperature, I should be ok? Moisture can find it’s way into the engine and transmission, bringing it up to operating temperature might

My wife’s car is a 2007 Corolla. She told me the car is making a noise that sounds like a shifting bag of rice. I rode in the car and we stopped at the end of the street and then started into a left-handed u-turn and it sounded to me like we ran over some light gravel/sand on the right-front, but we didn’t - that was the sound. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Happens when giving it gas while going into a sharp turn - either direction. She’s not sure that it happens 100% every time, but it does happen regularly. Hoping someone else here has experienced this sound before and can tell me what it is. Thank you

This is in regard to a 1993 Dodge Shadow with a 2.5L engine and 3-speed automatic transmission. When the engine is running, the transmission fluid leaks between the engine and transmission. Is there a replaceable seal, or does the torque converter itself need to be replaced? Once the motor and transmission are pulled, is it very difficult to remove and reinstall a torque converter onto a transmission? E.g. alignment.

2005 dodge neon. This was a problem a few months ago. The cable going from ignition to shifter was the problem. I removed the cable at the ignition, and it worked perfect. Till today. Again, the key will not move either way. Is it the ignition this time? is it something else? The starter sol has been going bad I assume for a while. once in a great while I have to lightly tap on the solonoid to get it to turn over. i assume not related. I have been planning to soon take off and get tested at auto zone. i started a new topic because the old one i could not find

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on a specific shifting issue with my 2007 Toyota Auris 1.4 D4D (Manual). I cannot shift from 4th gear into 3rd gear while the car is moving. It feels like hitting a physical wall, no grinding or noise, just a total lockout. Upshifting is fine 2nd to 3rd gear works perfectly. Also others gears no problem at all. From 1st to 5th to reverse. I can select 3rd gear easily when the car is stopped. The car recently sat in snow/freezing temperatures for 5 days. There is no “crunching” or grinding sound. And it was suddenly no prior symptoms. I moved my car afte

Hi all, These are the issues of a Maserati 1990 (Quattroporte) 422, 2000 SL.6 cylinders, fule injection. The car lives in Greece, and is in pristine condition. 1) The rpms go up when the engine is idle (no gear?) e.g when you stop at a light. Apparently this is an unexpected behavior. Could you give me a list of possible reasons? 2)When we start the car and/or go from 1st to 2nd gear, the engine doesn’t “fire” right away. There is a lag, as if the car stops. Thanks Vasso

When the temp drops below 28 degrees , my manual transmission in my Plymouth Laser 1992 (same as Eclipse) will refuse to shift into reverse. It just feels sloggy , stuck ( other gears work fine) . Now if the sun is out and the cabin itself warms up, the transmission will shift in reverse if the outside is below 28 degrees which seems to tell me the problem is in the linkage with the actual hand stick. Can this be repaired? When I described this to my mechanic , he said you have to replace the transmissin. After 33 years , can't this be a lubrication issue ( I changed the tranny fluid with synt
