Ev112 said: The basic platform doesn t have any edge in off-road capability, and certainly not in durability as it was designed for a different use case to the othersSeems it was the only one to successfully complete all the MOD tests. Cheap pickups are fine, but they’re not strong or durable in consumer form - eg flimsy stamped chassis that rust and crack. Seems that the role for these things in the forces is a lot more limited than it was, in any case.

As someone who supplies military vehicles to both the US and UK militaries and involved with vehicle trials when I was serving, I worry about what they are asking for. The Land Rover, from the Series 1 to the "Wolf" was to move troops around Germany/UK quickly and easily. Variants like Ambulance and Radio Fit came along. They were fine, not wonderful (!), and did the job. When we started to do jollys in the Middle East and our enemy wasnt playing by the Book Of Warsaw Pact things got bad, quickly. Afghanistan certainly stopped vehicles like Land Rovers going out of the main bases unless it was WMIK or Snatch and they soon started to kill people. Ive used Snatch out in Afghanistan and did trials on RWMIK. Foxhound came along to replace work done by Snatch and Jackal did what WMIK did. Land Rovers now move people around garrisons dropping off people at the medical centre and taking 12x12 tents to the CO's house for his weekend BBQ. When we go somewhere dodgy we will remember the coffins through Wooton Basset and drive around in Foxhound, Jackal and anything else that has a lot of armour on it.....hopefully!!!All we need is a civilian type 4x4 crew cabin, with a 1000kg load bed and if you must, paint it green. What worries me is the bit where I see these offerings with soldiers wearing helmets, body armour and carrying weapons trying to put about that these will be great driving around Ukraine or another Afghanistan, they will be not. We had one of the militarised 70 Series Toyota very very similar to the Babcock offer, in our factory last year and its too small if someone was to sit inside wearing all the kit I mentioned above. Yes, its still based on something that came out in the 80's and space has not changed. And no, the excuse we must be able to fix it with a hammer, is long gone. Everything now has a PLC, ECU etc that means the hammer stays in the toolbox. Im happy with something like this.......but use it in a safe benign environment and keep it away from the b
