In the early 1980s, another bad one involved the ESSEX Lotus Esprit Turbo that a then local owned. He used to drive it like he had stolen it, but one day his luck ran out, as he lost it in a big way on the Ridgeway in Chingford on the left hander section, which had a 30 mph limit.The Lotus snapped right & careered out of control, onto a dropped kerb & driveway entrance and smashed drivers door on, into a tree.My Mum drove past just after it had happened, debris was strewn across the road, inc a pair of trainers. A now Late pal, was working as recovery driver for a local Toyota & accident repair centre and he had the job of recovering the Esprit. He told me that the drivers seat, was half the width that it should have been. Pretty sure the passenger got out ok, but the driver somehow survived the smash with leg injuries and used to walk with a stick. Then in 1994, he lost control of his ZR1 Corvette on the Epping New Rd at high speed, whilst avoiding a walker who had stepped out of the forest, the ZR1 went up the kerb, into the trees with sadly fatal results. I believe that his passenger survived.

Ah, the crumple zones weren't given a chance to do their job because the hardpoints at the front of the truck were too high.fk... (Sobering thought for those of us who drive very-low cars)
