I would say depends on the "weekend toy" If you want to get a Bentley Turbo R or the like, then a manual would really not suit it or it's use. If you are looking at something for a bit of 'B' road fun then clearly manual. yes lots of cars have paddles to work the auto box manually, but it's not the same thing is it.
