I m also surprised by how well these hold their value (not this one specifically). I was looking for one or two year old ones and they re either side of £45k for anything under 20k miles. In the end I opted for a new one built to my spec. A whisker under £60k after some hard haggling.Does seem to be doing well, left alone, or just going for a moderate lift in power they seem to be pretty solid. It does bode well for standard engines the power they will take, its in quite a few cars so does seem a good option. I would perhaps err with BMWs to go for a B58's engined car and maybe tune it if I wanted more power than going for the next model up, the V8, as they seem more problematic. The 850i will still be more powerful but the tuned 840i is lighter so not as much in it as you may think.
