I've been pretty lucky with my car purchases over the years as most of my 20+ cars have been reliable and not required much outside routine maintenance. My last car, a 2016 Golf TSI Estate was particularly good having been in my ownership for c. 6 years and 100,000 miles and honestly didn't miss a beat. I have only had to give up on 3 cars in that time: a mk4 Golf Gti that had been pretty niggly and then spectacularly failed its first MOT, a WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee that had been pretty unreliable and then its automatic transmission failed and my R56 MINI Cooper, which had some engine issues t
My TT's gearbox decided to die (stuck in gear). It's an automatic. Since I'd put quite a lot of money into it (£3k?) over the last 2-3 years, I considered various options:-refurb it: anything up to £2500, would cost £150 to get it trailered to a specialist then £150 to review-replace the gearbox with a used one: would cost about £700 to buy plus £700 to install. Warranteed but if it's fked, then it would cost another £700 to remove and replace with the replacement so felt like a gamble.-replace with a manual box: but I prefer autos.I decided to scrap it and just put £2k into a new car.Basically, my rule for cheap cars is that if the fix costs more than 50% of the value of the car, I don't keep the car UNLESS it's an interesting car.

The last thing I need is another car, particularly a 20 year old one purchased sight unseen on eBay .The background to considering a Mini - earlier this year I met a group of online friends at Blyton Park for a group track day.We are all part of the breakaway from the Best Smoker Barge £1k-£5k thread when things became “difficult” a few years ago.I attended the track day in my 718 Cayman 4.0 GTS , great fun but I felt it might have been better suited to a track with longer straights and fewer tight corners necessitating a lot of braking , accelerating followed by braking again. We are doing it

For example, compare Henry s take on the Porsche- / Preuninger-hosted preview of the 991 (992?) GT3 with Harris s. Henry was starstruck and followed the PR script to the point of tedium. Whereas Harris went well off piste, and his GT3 preview was the more interesting TV moment . Similarly, Harris literally sits down and has a few bevvies and a laugh with Singer s Dickinson and Fawaz, whereas others simply fawn. Harry is di

I need to make some gears/pinions myself. I have access to a high quality 4-axis CNC mill, but not to a lathe. I'd like to cut these gears out of flat stock (facing), rather than round (edgewise) using narrow end mills. Being able to prototype this in plastic sheets is important to me. I've found a bunch of sites that explain hobbing and that have formulas for pitch etc, but no sites that actually generate the splines for the gear teeth to turn into Gcode. Before I sit down with Mathematica and derive it from first principles, does anyone know of a good resource for this?
