This is a great topic. I admit I m a strong supporter of lower powered cars, and I can t really understand the horsepower wars, other than seeing them as some sort of primitive social competitiveness.That said, how much horsepower is enough?Well, in a classic car, 90 hp is enough. Something like a Fulvia, for example. You ll probably only be cruising at 50 mph anyway, and that s part of the charm.In a more dynamic, fun sports car for the weekend, I d want a minimum of 120 hp/ton and a maximum of around 250 hp/ton, with 200 hp/tonne being the sweet spot.For an everyday car? My F31 BMW 316d Touring is rated at 116 hp. After 100,000 miles, I honestly can t think of a single situation, apart from one aborted overtaking manoeuvre in Corsica, where I wished it had more power.It will sit at 80 mph all day on the motorway, which is its use case about 85% of the time, just like a 335d would. And here in Austria, where I live, it saves me thousands of euros in tax.For a track work / hillclimbs / trackdays 300hp / ton is what I need.
