Things got really bad when the cost-cutting started to bite under BMW ownership but even then a single, usually cheapish, repair by someone who knows what they're doing should last forever. The K-series in my Elise let go at about 4 years old; the belts were nearly due anyway so I got them done at the same time and the total bill only came to about £200 more than the belts alone would have been. It's been fine for the 18 years since. I quite like the F/TF. The driving position isn't great and they tend to leak like sieves, but if the suspension is in good condition the handling is really quite good and the K-series is a lovely engine for a light sports car (which is why Lotus, Caterham, and who knows how many other manufacturers picked it up). I'd rather find a good TF160 for a bit more money though, if I was in the market for a cheap sports car. Edited by kambites on Friday 4th September 09:07

Yeah mines on 91k now, it does feel the same as when I got it 30k ago but it would probably benefit from a bit of love. Thats not a bad quote actually, I've been getting more around the £650 mark around the Reading/Basingstoke area. I wonder as well if the diff would benefit from a change as it does get big slugs of torque fired into it

I saw one of these in the southbound petrol station at Liphook on the A3, must be around 20 years ago (it was still a production model at the time). I was in that queue to pay when it turned up, and the owner ended up behind me in the queue. Asked him if it was a Fighter, "Yes it is." He had something of the Ace Rimmer about him. bd.
