It has been done but I'm a stickler for keeping things original and it isn't really a car for driving quickly in anyway, I don't think. Horses for courses and all that.I had a 205 for many years (my mum actually had 6 back to back when I was a child), sold it during one of the lockdowns, often think about it still. You can't beat that tin can lightness of older French cars. I've got a 20 year old 987 S for when something needs to be taken by the scruff on the neck. That's taxed all year round too so gets a bit more action than this one does.

Having covered a whopping 250 miles last year I felt it was time to take the Cabriolet back to its homeland in search of pain au raisins and moules frites. Aside from the important pre trip mechanical checks I swapped the head unit for a Blaupunkt one with Bluetooth playback. As much as I love engratiating myself into all things French their admirable dedication to their own language songs isn't totally for me and it doesn't play 'Baby Shark' as much as my near two year old daughter demands. I liked this head unit as although basic it kind of looks period correct.The first and only real dissapointed was what has become of ferry breakfasts on P&O these days, don't get me wrong, they were never a gastronomist's delight but I think Mike Skinner may well now refer to this particular ferry line as 'sh*t in a tray merchants'.I didn't plan a scenic route as such but set Google Maps to avoid motorways and tolls and once Calais was succesfully exited, enjoyed the French countryside in all its glory with a snoozing toddler and a 4 year year old who bravely put up with having the roof down in near perfect conditions for just over an hour before the wind's constant tangling of her hair became too much and asked for it to be put up. As I've said previously, this isn't a sports car, it doesn't handle with precision and isn't fast. When weighted with the possesions of a family of four for a four night break you really notice all of these attributes when going up and down the sometimes steep hills of Northern France and round some of their glorious bends. If I am being honest, it made it all the more enjoyable, planning for inclines well in advance as you see them looming before you, I don't think I broke the speed limit once and didn't feel the need to.We used the car sparingly during the week, aside from a couple of trips to a local park where a man told me in his best English that he thought the car was 'beautiful' and did a kind of chef's kiss.
