Collection day was yesterday. A 6:07am train got me to Great Malvern for 10:43am where Joe kindly picked me up from the station to go to FCSS HQ. There were around 15 or so coupes various states of attention required. Saw some lovely Scots Green and Tan ones too. Joe was a nice guy, as you'd expect, knows the cars inside and out and is also very much passionate about Italian cars. Which is the main thing right?!The OEM wheels were now back on and looking great, with new Toyo Proxes TR1s. This was very much the std looking car I'd imagined when I originally started looking at the coupes.I went into the collection drive with fairly modest expectations and also a bit of, am i going to make the 4 hour trip back in a car ive never driven and probably hasnt had a long run in over 15 years! After driving hire cars on holiday recently, a yaris TD and a very tired Micra, I think I'd almost conditioned myself to accept that this was an old car and that the appeal would be more about owning my own little piece of Italian automotive history than the actual driving experience.I was completely wrong. This car felt so tight and together. The gear change was chunky, with a precise long throw and some purposeful movement required. The steering was heavy compared to my daily, but that just added to the feeling of driving. The clutch feels new, dependable and easy to modulate. Brakes are good, but a bit of soft travel at the top inch that I'd rather wasn't there. But plenty enough power. Suspension was really the surprise considering this is the original bits. The ride is compliant and the body control is perfect, tied down, but not inert. Makes me think how 19" wheels and heavier cars have really made people forget how well a car could combine handling and ride.And the engine feels very healthy. There's a lovely deep-chested sound and the turbo delivery isn't the crude on/off experience I'd half expected. It comes in as a proper building surge and it holds well to the redline rathe
