We had both a 164 and a 166, both V6s. I preferred the 164. Better driver’s car and better looking. Don’t like these late face-lift 166s at all. Not sure why the 156 keeps getting mentioned in a 166 article: that’s like comparing a BMW 3 series with a 5 series.

Great Matt you highlighted the Alfa 166. Back in the day I had a couple of these as company cars. A 2.5, then 3.0 and 3.2 Ti - in the company car park I had many conversations from suppliers and when lifting customers about the 166 - it was always a good conversation starter. Still have a 166 3.0 V6 24V manual pre facelift which I use regularly. Have been blessed to own, GTV’6, 75’s, 90, 147 & 156 Gta’s , 164’s and the modern stuff too such as Guilia QV’s plus more, including JLR, TVR and the odd 5 cylinder Audi, but that doesn’t matter to your readers as they will have fallen asleep at this stage now, having confessed to being an owner of Italian cars. So I am dammed by this back catalogue. But the 166 is sadly and still is so misunderstood, as was the likes of Lancia Kappa Coupe 5 pot Turbo and Thesis 3.2 Busso.The 166 as does my wide body 155 V6 get constant admiring looks and conversations. The BMW’s, Merc’s and Quattros at the time were and are still fabulous cars - the majority of the motoring press said so. The 166 was never going to win the motoring press’s affection, because it depends on your definition of what a great mode of transport is. Whether a 166 series 1 or facelift there is a design beauty that seems ageless. Then the interior, as you say, pure luxury the leather still smells like new and everything works. So much is synthetic today - I had a ghibli trofeo V8, it was as mad as a box of frogs but the interior was stunning. Real leather. The Grecale Trofeo came out and went to see it. Opened the door and that glorious Italian leather smell had gone…. My 3.0 v6 24v manual returns on average 29 mpg, it’s well past its Carbon Positive foot print - sips on E5 but I love it!You have done my soul good Matt👍Graize Mille!
