What are external combustion engines? How do they work? What types of external combustion engines are there? What are all the common advantages and disadvantages of external combustion engines in comparison to the much more common internal combustion engine?
Heat engines (in thermodynamics) convert thermal (or heat) energy to mechanical energy. Heat engines typically work by utilizing the expansion of a gas and/or liquid as it is heated. External combustion engines are a type of heat engine where the heat is produced (by combustion - burning) outside of the engine itself. From the wikipedia page: An external combustion engine (EC engine) is a heat engine where a working fluid, contained internally, is heated by combustion in an external source, through the engine wall or a heat exchanger. The fluid then, by expanding and acting on the mechanism of the engine, produces motion and usable work. The fluid is then cooled, compressed and reused (closed cycle), or (less commonly) dumped, and cool fluid pulled in (open cycle air engine). An example of an external combustion engine is a cylinder of a steam locomotive . In a steam locomotive, heat energy is produced by combustion from chemical energy in the fire box. This heat energy is transferred

Whilst scrolling through Facebook market place (please don't judge me!) I discovered this Riley 1.5, a car I know very little about and thought it had a charm about it that I liked. I kept scrolling but would see it popping up for about a week and a half.About a week into the occasional glance and some wishful thinking about the sort of car I would turn it into I showed Mrs. Jim. Normally she would roll her eyes and pat me on the head and tell me "ok", this time she said "why not go and have a look?" We turn up at this yard and it is stacked out in classic cars which just amazed me, they had

Been using an X1 all week, my eldests daily as he borrowed my Jaguar XJ for a trip up to Scotland.Didnt really relish the prospect as always thought it a bit of a boring lump but after a few days with it, I have to say I gelled with it.2.0 diesel Xdrive, goes ok but what impressed me was the ride and handling, was thinking would be a bit roly poly but I threw it about a bit and its amazingly competent and even, dare I say it, quite good fun. Plus its very practical and handles bumpy roads quite well.Did get me thinking that I would consider something like an X3 next, one with the 3.0 petrol, b
