I too came to the conclusion it might well be people keeping an eye on the MPG. For the record I was keeping an eye on this readout too. 24.8mpg, might need to get me one of these 2.0tdi BMW's I remember, back in the late 1990s / early 2000s, if you weren't doing 85+ on the M40 you were probably in the inside lane. The motorway equivalent to the Overton Window has certainly shifted significantly closer to 60 MPH than 80 MPH in the past 10 years or so.You'd need to be in the inside lane, i had an MAN artic in the 80's that would cruise comfortably at 95.I do wonder if trucks being limited to 60 at first and then 55 somehow influenced the gradual slowing of car cruising speeds, when many trucks were regularly cruising well over 60mph, my normal speed in a truck was 70 on the motorway back then, the bill tended not to bother you in England at least unless you were bullying/tailgating, those passing in cars were going past with probably 10/15 mph speed differential which is nothing really, as trucks were reduced to mincing along at 52/55mph maybe the speed differential in a car passing 25/30mph faster had some psychological effect in those in the car.
