서스펜션은 두 가지 역할을 한다: 울퉁불퉁한 노면을 부드럽게 만들어주고, 승차감 향상이 주요 목적이다. 실제로 양산차는 공장에서 승차감과 성능 사이의 타협점으로 서스펜션을 튜닝한다. F1과 NASCAR은 당연히 성능 중심으로 튜닝된다. 다양한 차를 운전하면 같은 도로에서도 어떤 차는 매우 부드럽고 안정적인 반면, 다른 차는 더 울퉁불퉁한 승차감을 느낄 것이다. 같은 속도로 같은 코너를 돌 때도 어떤 차는 거의 수평을 유지하는 반면, 다른 차는 심하게 기울어지는 것을 볼 수 있다. 이 모두는 서스펜션 튜닝에 관한 것이다: 편안한 소파처럼 운전할 것인가, 스포티한 고카트처럼 운전할 것인가? 서스펜션은 타이어를 노면에 밀착시키고, 노면의 불규칙함과 운전자의 조작에도 불구하고 타이어를 계속 눌러붙이려고 한다.
