You had to be really committed and rev it hard to get the best out of it, the mid-range felt weaker than the 8 valve. Great handling car, beautifully balanced. I felt the biggest improvement over the mark 1 was brakes that didn t fade worryingly quickly.This.
I wasnt a big fan of the early GTi, as i was obsessed with the R5 Gordini Turbo & even more so with the R5 GT Turbo, but memories are flooding back ( And the tears are forming ) of the 2 x GTi that my dear Late Step Dad R.I.P. owned. Circa 1982, he traded his T plate Talbot Alpine ( which he taught me to drive in, an under rated car ) for a stunning silver V plate GTi. He hadnt long known my Mum and decided that he had to up his game. He was a senior engineer at BT and was driving all over the country racking up huge miles, plus he was a Director of his local Samaritans, often doing late shifts there. One day a young lad pulled out on him, stoving in one of its rear 1/4s, ins co had it repaired. I also remember plod chased him one eve, but he got away. I cant remember when he sold it, i think to one of the staff at the VW garage or body shop in Croydon that he had it serviced at, but his next car was an immaculate D plate 5 door GTi in silver, i remember its plate ended in DFS. He decided on a 5 door, as he was helping out an elderly friend plus his Samaritans work and it was a lot more practical car.He racked up the miles in that one as well, but managed to take early retirement in 92. In 93, he told me that 5th gear was starting to get noisy and would i sell it for him. I tried to convince him to get it repaired, but he dropped it off with me at my then house at Collier Row and i put an advert in LOOT. It sold really quickly to a lovely Jamaican couple who were over the moon with it, paying £3,500. I really wished that i had had the money at the time to buy it. Thinking back, the Golf GTi both MK1 and particularly the MK2, were literally everywhere back then, but like the once so common MK 1 3 Litre Capri, just where have they all gone.....

However, quickly arrive behind a snail-moving vehicle. Country lane, but quite wide and easy to make progress. Except we have the brake lights in front sending out Morse Code signals; applies them for almost everything (or imagined). Next, traffic lights, stops, and then turns left, no signal, and snail acceleration; we've still got the Morse Code signals going. We proceed like this, at about half the speed the road is capable of, for about

(Had something very similar just 30 minutes ago - row of parked cars my side, car in front waiting for oncoming traffic, but I hung back ~1.5 to 2 car lengths just to give me some wiggle room, sitting with my brake lights on and at least 2ft from the kerb. Dumbfk in a new Volvo comes steaming up past me before looking past the end of his nose and seeing that there's a car coming
