This sounds like another of those fkwits that think driving on DRLs is a good idea. But then the fkwits who mandated them should have included lights on the rear too, or better still included Auto-lights as part of the package!. Mine lets you turn on the rears when using DRLs, but at reduced brightness (and I think you can disable them completely). I have no idea how common these are.Auto-lights don't work for fog in my experience - they'll stay on DRL mode, because the sensors usually only care about brightness (hopefully newer cars with their matrix of cameras will do a better job of this, but I haven't tested).

Got a manual Mk 7.5 Gti for the boy last week although I’ve been the one driving it at every opportunity so far. It’s a fantastic thing that handles, brakes and steers in the most engaging way with the engine having both torque and revs.Exterior compared to the Mk 8 is actually very similar and I still find it hard to spot the difference. Interior I much prefer of course although there is more hard plastic than I was expecting.
