Does recirculated cabin air pass through the air filter?
Cabin air filters will usually filter the air on either setting if located on the cabin side of the firewall. But even in recirculation mode, outside air will make its way in. Just be sure to replace it as frequently as your manual suggests. However, filters located under the hood at the air intake will not filter recirculated air. Edit: I decided to look for confirmation and found this: http://www.autos.com/auto-repair/how-does-a-cabin-air-filter-work I can also add links to confirm that a little bit of outside air will still make its way in on recirculation mode if it's necessary.

Hello, My car is like groundhog day with Bill Murray. Every morning I drive to work 10 miles on the highway. As I hit the the red light…it sputter and stalls. I start it and no problem off we go. This is the ONLY time it stalls during the day.This is EVERY DAY lol. Now it has thrown at times a P0171 lean code doing this so I can assume this is the problem. I am thinking of buying a performance air filter for my 2001 SEAT Ibiza (6K2). The reason I'm considering this is because my stock filter needs replacing and I figured I might as well do it right the first time. Now since the stock filter sits on top of the engine I need a new place to stick my performance filter. There are some pictures on the Internet of people having performance air filters, but none seem to explain why they placed it in the place that they did. I have a MB E500 4matic 2005 model. Its coming up for service oil and filter, cabin filter, brake fluid flush and fill up according to the dealers book. How important is the brake fluid flush and fill up? and what frequency is necessary. same for cabin filter - is that for the air coming in?
