The real examples of this sort of thing come from across the pond:Chevrolet Camaro base model with 2,500 cc Iron Duke engine (four cylinder); could be had with automatic transmission for the true masochist. IROC-Z, which could be had with 305 and 350 cubic inch engines and various manual gearboxes.

OP asked for suggestions of cars where one version of a model was considered poor and another version of the same model, excellent. Everyone seems to be just posting the biggest gulf in power within a range. The 316d, basic Merc 190, Metro, base model Yaris etc when new were all excellent cars compared to their competitors. I think only response so far that answers the question is the mk5 Escort which was shocking as a base model but excellent as the Cosworth. I do agree with this - the OP was after 'silk purses made from sow's ears', not just cars with a big performance disparity. As another poster pointed out, the standard Metro was a good supermini in its day, but however cool it looked and how fast it went the 6R4 was never a great rally car, so is actually the reverse of the premise. The ordinary Chevette was a perfectly decent car, even if the HS is far more 'PH'. The Mk5 Escort v. Cosworth is one that certainly fits the premise. I think the original 'plain Jane' Mk1 VW Golf versus the original GTI is in the running too - the original Golf was a solid, practical and sharp-looking thing but if you drive a mid-70s Golf 1300 with its heavy, inert steering, flat-power-curve engine with a Pierburg carburettor, suspension that manages to be both harsh and bouncy, understeer tendencies and brakes that feel like they use blocks of wood, you would never guess that it would be the basis of a superlative driver's car that defined an automotive epoch.

How did we get to the point that something like that is put into production by a major brand like VW?I realise it's not entirely exceptional. But history won't be kind to this era of taken-on tablets. They'll look incredibly dated and tacky once the fashion passes. It's not fashion, it's just cheap and lazy cost cutting on the part of VW (and most other brands). I can't believe anyone wants that crap in their car. I'm going to be in trouble when I need to replace the family bus unless I can find something

Local dealer matched DtD.According to the BoE inflation calculator, that's a shade under 40 grand today.
