증상
촉매변환기(촉매) 도난이 증가하는 문제. 특히 2001-2008년식 혼다 재즈(Jazz) SE 모델의 촉매변환기가 도난 위험이 높아 보험사에서 보험 상품을 중단함. 같은 모델이라도 도난 위험이 크게 다른 이유 불명.
처리 내용
촉매변환기 도난은 다른 차량에 재장착하려는 목적이 아니라 내부 귀금속(백금, 팔라듐) 회수가 목적임. 귀금속은 배기가스의 유해 성분을 정화시키는 촉매 역할을 함. 도둑들은 회수한 촉매를 비양심적인 거래처에 팔아 귀금속을 추출하고 수익화함. 모델마다 귀금속 함유량이 다름 - 귀금속이 많이 들어있는 촉매일수록 도난 대상이 됨. 추가적으로 중요한 요소는 접근성임. 어떤 촉매는 배기 매니폴드에 직접 부착되거나 깊숙이 위치해 제거하기 어려움. 도둑들은 쉽게 탈거할 수 있는 촉매가 장착된 차량을 선택함.
