Well here we go then - the R8 has gone to a very happy chap and the replacement has arrived. I’m writing this on my way to collect it (don’t panic, my old man is driving!)So what did I go for? You can cheat and scroll down a bit to find out but, for anyone who likes a little foreplay in their lives, here’s the back story…Once I’d decided to put the R8 up for sale, following my own advice for buying cars, I sat down and really thought about what I would use the replacement for and the answer to that is simple: Driving for the thrill. That’s it. This car’s purpose is nothing else. Not showing off at shows. Not the owners club. Not setting the fastest laptime. Not commuting. Not restoration or tinkering.. just starting on the button and going out and driving for the thrill. I then thought about what that really meant, and for that I decided that it needed to sit about halfway between the Atom and the R8. If the Atom was raw, cut down, hilarious simplicity and the R8 was serious, grown up, complex majesty then I wanted something that sat firmly in-between those two extremes. I thought of lots of cars, from GR Yaris, to something like a TVR (so the suggestion of a Sagaris wasn’t far from the truth) and all the obvious BMW (M2 CS) / Merc (GT-R) / Aston (Vantage V12) alternatives in between. I even seriously considered Ben Lowden’s MX5 because it seemed like a very simple answer to this question. Then I listed out what I thought the replacement would NEED to have to deliver that halfway house between Atom and R8: - Two seats- Rear wheel drive- Manual- Normally aspirated- Great sound- Fast- Exciting while moving at any speed- Interesting to own and look at- Solid residuals / Provence- Utterly reliableI then added two more things that I really WANTED this time around:- Convertible - A PorscheOkay. Let me explain those extra two. Convertible because, bar the MINI One years ago, and the Atom, I’ve never owned a real convertible - but recently I’ve driven my daughter’s TT roads

They're (obviously) expensive cars to maintain regardless, but add on £800/year tax, 20mpg @ £2/litre, Audi's notorious decision to be absolutely terrible at parts provision as things get over 10years old (especially RS side) makes it even more of a potentially risky, expensive proposition. You'd have to really want one. Shame, as this is much nicer than their mode

Meh.Here s a Jaguar object lesson in design, soul, light in the dark, etc.Like the Alfa it will also never get made.Saw a CX-75 in the flesh at Goodwood many years ago. Made literally everything else there look really REALLY dull

Writing the title made me wonder how many rear engined coupes have existed. I got 911 (obviously), some Alpines, Delorean, Fiat / Abarth versions of the 850. There must be more. But this is none of those. Its Japanese, made in the '80s and sold here in reasonable numbers. But they are now firmly in the category of 'rare but nobody gives a st'. And only a handful remain. It's a car I've had a yearning to own and got outbid on one at auction many years ago. More recently I contacted a seller on FB, we agreed a price and then he blocked me...So I broke the first rule of car buying and bought one s

I'm debating what I do with a speedo conversion. Plus point with the Lockwood is you get mph and kph whereas converting it on the CAN leaves you with mph only. Or I could just leave it in Km. I'm fairly used to doing it in my head that way around. Of course, there was an incident in the Forester where I forgot it was converted and I took it up to an indicated 100 thinking 'this feels strangely fast'
