I have a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX, but I suspect my question can be generalized to apply to many smaller cars. Not being a fan of donut spare tires, when I replaced my tires about a year ago I kept the one that was in the best shape, mounted on a used steel rim that the shop sold me for cheap. Much to my chagrin, the now full-sized spare does not fit in the well designed for the donut, so it's taking up space in my trunk (and sliding around a bit despite the bungees). I have researched kits for mounting the tire, but haven't found anything suitable for my car. Is there any solution so I can hav
I destroyed a back tire on my 2008 Subaru Impreza manual transmission with viscous coupling. The manual says all four tires must be the same size. The spare tire must only be mounted onto the rear axle when applicable. I don't need to pull a fuse to disable AWB on my manual, but automatic transmissions do. I talked to a tire mechanic who has been doing this for decades. He says that I do NOT have to replace all four tires with new ones. He said replacing just the single blown rear tire with a new one (same general size, but different brand and likely slightly different circumference) will be t
There's some idiot stealing similar cars to mine -- mid to late 90s Subarus -- in this part of town. The police are pretty confident that he has a jiggle key (the cars have been mostly recovered, dumped but unharmed; apparently he's just using them to drive around for a while). I'd like to do something that will make my car annoying enough to start that if he picks it out, he'll likely give up in a few minutes. A poor man's starter interrupt, in other words. Something I can disconnect when I park and then reconnect when I'm ready to go again. I'm looking into it for the future, but at the mome
Returning to Upstate NY from a T’giving visit in Boston, my turbo bit the bullet on the Mass pike around Worcester. Just prior to losing it, I smelled what seemed like plastic burning, but thought it was coming from the old van in front of me. Next I started hearing a whirring sound and felt the loss in power. I limped to the Subaru dealer just outside of Worcester where they told me that the repair would cost ~$6,000 … the quote included ~$4,000 in parts, 16 hours of labor and some cushion for incidentals. The parts list included a short block for $2,100 and the turbo itself for $1,100. I gue
About 2 years ago I posted here about my 2018 Subaru Impreza which was emitting smoke at start-up. The car had no other obvious symptoms and the dealer told us it was condensation, but we knew it was not condensation. I got many excellent suggestions here for what it might be and we followed up on them but nothing solved the problem. I’m posting now because we finally think we have figured it out. We continued searching for ideas about what it might be and we found some Subaru owners posting that their cars emitted smoke when they were parked slanted down or to the right (passenger side). My d
