Thats remarkably clean and rust free underneath considering its 1998.
Lots of work going on the past few days with fab now pretty complete bar a bit of chopping to the bonnet: First up I bowed to peer pressure and made a grill:Then tackled rolling the arches, the rears on a Boxster are double skinned and notorious for being very difficult / impossible to roll. This is complicated by a very poor choice of arch rolling tools compatible with 5 X 130 PCD hubs. Obviously when faced with this the bet option is the cheapest arch roller that Amazon sell First job was to open up the slots in the 5X120 PCD to get it to mate to a 5 X 130 hub:Which worked:And with a few revisions and some retapped threads the worlds cheapest arch roller worked an absolute treat! The rears were a challenge but were achieved with no cracked paint, just took a lot of heat gun to keep the temperature up and some slow and gentle work. With that done we got on with the bit I was most looking forward to, bar work! The goal here was to get enough protection onto the car that it could take some hits without adding a huge amount of weight to it. As such the choice was a 30mm seamless tube in 3mm wall thickness to give us a good weight to strength ratio whilst at the same time not going crazy with the amount of tubes! We started with the roof rack on the basis it's the first time I've bent any tube myself so best to start with the least visible bit. Turns out tube bending isn't too difficult if you have a really nice bender and die! Then tigged together by the ever legendary Ant Partridge: Fits a treat! And rotates just as designed Very pleased with how the weld ins worked out for the front and rear attachment points:With that success in the bag we got straight into the front bumper:Designed with the minimum amount of tube for the strength required where we needed it. The lower tube is flush with the floor of the car on the basis that this will take an impact rather than that impact smashing the bottom of the front tub. Verticals then triangulate this into the top tube with

Writing the title made me wonder how many rear engined coupes have existed. I got 911 (obviously), some Alpines, Delorean, Fiat / Abarth versions of the 850. There must be more. But this is none of those. Its Japanese, made in the '80s and sold here in reasonable numbers. But they are now firmly in the category of 'rare but nobody gives a st'. And only a handful remain. It's a car I've had a yearning to own and got outbid on one at auction many years ago. More recently I contacted a seller on FB, we agreed a price and then he blocked me...So I broke the first rule of car buying and bought one s

I'm debating what I do with a speedo conversion. Plus point with the Lockwood is you get mph and kph whereas converting it on the CAN leaves you with mph only. Or I could just leave it in Km. I'm fairly used to doing it in my head that way around. Of course, there was an incident in the Forester where I forgot it was converted and I took it up to an indicated 100 thinking 'this feels strangely fast'
