Why is my starter sometimes making clicking sounds instead of starting?
Usually when I hear the starter is clicking, I'm inclined think this is a battery issue, however, considering what else you're describing, it is most likely the solenoid having issues. The battery can be checked at the posts to ensure you're seeing a good voltage, which should be in the 12.5 - 13vdc with the engine off. If below that, it may be the battery which is causing the issue. You can possibly take the solenoid apart and resurface both the cable lugs (#2 & #4) on the inside as well as the washer itself to give them all new contact surfaces. I've also had some luck with turning the copper washer over and turning the studs 180ยฐ. This too can work in a pinch and allow the solenoid to continue working until you can get a replacement for it. The solenoid provides two separate functions. The first is to move the starter gear into position to make a connection with the ring gear which when turning starts the engine. The second is to energize the starter motor itself (power is provi
