The battery within that car is owned by the lender and forms an integral part of the collateral for that debt. If you rented an object to someone would you want that customer doing anything to jeopardise the predicted value of that object at the end of the rental agreement? That's the number that you have constructed your entire revenue plan around. This is why the lender steers its customers into the colours and options that work best for them, limits the distance the user is allowed to travel, levies fees on tiny scratches and pretty much controls every aspect of the use while it still owns the car. And this is the problem with allowing the battery to be used by the renter to arbitrage their domestic utility bill. In fact there are two problems, the first is the obvious one that it's not their battery to fk about with and age in that manner. The battery belongs to the lender and will only be used in a manner that protects the value of the asset. The second is more nuanced which is why the juddering fk would you rent someone a battery and not be taking a significant slice of the arbitrage potential?I
