It turns out that the Polo GTi was a good choice overall for the road trip. I would have enjoyed the roof off going through some of the Pyrenees and parts of Northern Spain but the 3 day drive across France to get there, less so. In the mountains and N260 in particular, the rarely used sport mode on the DSG was brilliant and the car was a lot of fun to drive. The ferry back from Bilbao was a first for us as well and was quite relaxing.
I have visited the manufacturer of the exhaust system and had the full guided tour and they fitted the Mk2 to the car for me.It is quite the set-up and they make a lot of systems for all the sporty makes. The range of jigs and pattern cards was impressive.Looking at some of the work in progress, it was interesting to see the different collectors on the older classics and the different fittings and innards on the 911 was a surprise. One of the fittings for a GT3 was significantly over-engineered (10mm plate!) and the variety of tools, presses, rollers, bending machines and different forms of welding and seaming machines has clearly taken a long time to build up and would require quite a bit of experience to use properly. There was a cut open Aston Martin system there and interestingly, it is exactly the same design style as the 986 system with the various compartments and holes in pipes to let the gases through quicker in different chambers and blocked in others. Having watched the exhaust being changed several times now, they made it look fairly easy. Helped by the design of their system. They unbolted the tail pipes and went in over the top of the cross pipe and dropped the main support bracket fairly easily. Not sure how they would have done that with the standard system! So what is new. The cross pipe now has a centre plate in it with a couple of holes within rather than being totally open. The by pass pipes are a bit longer and not as close to the main system. Some of the internal packing is different and the top mounting bracket is longer and fixes at a different angle. So far, I am very pleased with the sound. It is a lot quieter than the Mk1 and has a bit of a crisp bark at the higher revs. I am sure the other had that but it was so loud, you couldn't hear it. It will be a few hundred miles before I can make a final decision but so far so good.Annoyingly, the clamps to the cat have a small leak on both sides. The local garage that fitted the Mk1 system was a b

Writing the title made me wonder how many rear engined coupes have existed. I got 911 (obviously), some Alpines, Delorean, Fiat / Abarth versions of the 850. There must be more. But this is none of those. Its Japanese, made in the '80s and sold here in reasonable numbers. But they are now firmly in the category of 'rare but nobody gives a st'. And only a handful remain. It's a car I've had a yearning to own and got outbid on one at auction many years ago. More recently I contacted a seller on FB, we agreed a price and then he blocked me...So I broke the first rule of car buying and bought one s

I'm debating what I do with a speedo conversion. Plus point with the Lockwood is you get mph and kph whereas converting it on the CAN leaves you with mph only. Or I could just leave it in Km. I'm fairly used to doing it in my head that way around. Of course, there was an incident in the Forester where I forgot it was converted and I took it up to an indicated 100 thinking 'this feels strangely fast'
