일반 클러치는 기어박스를 구동하는 내부 허브가 단일 캐스팅으로 되어 있으며, 클러치 플레이트 압력은 외부 압력판과 스프링으로만 작용합니다. 슬리퍼 클러치는 내부 허브가 두 개의 부품으로 구성되어 있으며, 이들이 개(dog)를 통해 맞물립니다(바이크 기어박스/트랜스미션과 동일한 방식). 개는 평탄한 구동면과 경사진 면을 가지고 있습니다. 정상 주행 조건(엔진이 후륜을 구동)에서는 두 부품 허브가 일반 클러치처럼 작동합니다. 하지만 스로틀을 줄일 때 후륜에서 역토크가 발생하면 슬리퍼가 작동합니다. 이로 인해 개의 경사진 면이 두 부품을 밀어내어 플레이트의 압력을 감소시키고 약간의 슬립을 허용하여 후륜 록업이나 호핑을 방지합니다.
