We took it away for a weekend and I recall thinking for x pounds, what a pile of junk it was compared to what I’d been used too eg volvo, Saab 9000, Audi 100’s, Mercedes etc. there was just no reason for the money you’d pick a 600 v the others. As for the 800, again I remember them new and they were poorly nailed together junk. Remember fords of the day. Capris, granadas and so. All the interior trim being a bit loose, sloppy and so on compared to properly built stuff. It’s weird wh

2xChevrons said: Here's a hard-hitting opinion on what cars killed BMC/BL - the Mini. The Mini, our national 'people's car', was a cuckoo in the nest. A parasite. A cancer. It was phenomenally successful but hugely intensive and costly to build, was riddled with engineering issues and warranty claims. It was woefully underdeveloped (not reaching any stage that could reasonably be called 'finished' until it had been on sale for over a decade and its original manufacturer had collapsed). And it was costed and priced so poorly (by a company with utterly, farcically abysmal accounting and financial management) that every single one BMC made (some two million-or-so cars) represented a loss to that company. Every single Mini BMC made and sold put the company in a weaker financial position than if it hadn't made or sold that car. Every pound BMC sunk into its massive production capacity expansion in the 1960s to keep pace with demand for the Mini (a car that, in no small part, was so popular because it was so incredibly - literally 'not credibly' - cheap for its design and capabilities) was throwing good money after bad. All those new production lines, all those new component factories, all those new-hired workers just improved BMC's ability to lose money. The Mini's critical, commercial (in sales terms) and cultural success made Alec Issigonis an untouchable genius. It ensured that his ideas about vehicle design - bold, groundbreaking, innovative, exciting, fantastically capable but also idiosyncratic and without an iota of consideration for complexity, cost, style, marketing, ongoing development or a larger product plan - became BMC's way of doing things (with one big caveat which I'll get on to later). The Mini seemed so great, and Issigonis such a God, that its fundamental design was allowed to underpin BMC's other new car ranges in the 1960s, leading to the ADO16 (1100/1300) and the ADO17 (1800/2200 - the 'Landcrab'). Both inherited the Mini's yin/yang design - simul
