Chapter 1 : BodyworkDecember 2019Here we go then!Off to a great start... having to smash the rear lights out after someone sealed them in...Thankfully they were junk anyway. Won't be needing this...Bumpers off...Car surprisingly straight. No historic collision damage...Interior all out for better observations and safer welding...Subframe dropped...Engine & gearbox out...Exhaust heatshields a bit tender...Generally not very pretty...Fuel tank and suspension dropped all ready for work...Engine BayMultiple holes in both bulkhead and chassis legs...All cut out...Many evenings...FloorMultiple holes in the floor corners and around seat mounting points...Multiple repair patches made...Fuel Tank BracketWith the tank dropped, the tank support bracket was removed by drilling out all the spot welds...Cleaned, salvaged and painted...I converted that to a bolt-in bracket instead. Front Wheel Arches & BulkheadDaylight through the bulkhead...... into the front wheel arch...... all cut out and welded...Rear Suspension MountingsThe rear suspension has reactionary torque rods either side connected to the body. They are in the direct line-of-fire from the road wheel and collect all the muck...All cut out as junk...No repair parts available. All this needs to be scratch built from box section......all to make these pieces......going together thus...... ready for powdercoat...Chassis all welded with new box section and welded captive nuts...Rear FloorDaylight in few places...Made worse with the magic screwdriver...Just easier to cut it all out and start a fresh...Nearside rear looking up...Making templates...Rear CrossmemberThe rear suspension has a Panhard Rod, secured to the body via this rather crumbly crossmember...Not available new, so fabricated & repaired...Treated and painted...Seatbelt MountingsNot great for clunk click every trip...All weld repaired...Nearside Rear ArchGeneral badness...Needed a bigger dustpan...Inner and outers cut back...Repair sections cut in...All stone ch

Writing the title made me wonder how many rear engined coupes have existed. I got 911 (obviously), some Alpines, Delorean, Fiat / Abarth versions of the 850. There must be more.But this is none of those. Its Japanese, made in the '80s and sold here in reasonable numbers. But they are now firmly in the category of 'rare but nobody gives a st'. And only a handful remain. It's a car I've had a yearning to own and got outbid on one at auction many years ago. I'm debating what I do with a speedo conversion. Plus point with the Lockwood is you get mph and kph whereas converting it on the CAN leaves you with mph only. Or I could just leave it in Km. I'm fairly used to doing it in my head that way around. Of course, there was an incident in the Forester where I forgot it was converted and I took it up to an indicated 100 thinking 'this feels strangely fast'
