Wow, I'm amazed to see so much interest! Thanks everyone idealstandard said: I was very tempted when I saw this ad too.Well happy its gone to a PHer, looking forward to seeing the updatesNo worries, I'll keep the updates coming!scottos said: This is the best way to buy a 996, any internet searching on them will put people off but they are brilliant cars. Gen 1's with the aerokit will always be on peoples want list as well, so that ones an especially good buy, assuming you got it for a great price!Indeed, I knew a bit about the problems 996/997's can have and deliberately went for this one be
Update time! It's a biggie.I decided not to drive the car until a specialist had checked the engine for me. It didn't feel too bad so it made sense that if there was a problem developing it should be checked before making anything worse. The drive to the specialist was good fun though! I dropped it off and my car was by far the worst in the car park The whole place was stuffed full of lovely air cooled and modern bits of kit.I heard nothing for a day or so. No news is good news, right? Well...It turns out the engine is totally fine!! It was compression checked and passed with no issues, all cylinders within tolerance. They bore scoped it too even though 3.4's don't usually have scoring issues. Again, absolutely nothing untoward. I was really excited by this, and the 996 became my daily driver safe in the knowledge there's nothing terminal going on.There is, however, quite a big list of 'other stuff' that needs doing. It's mostly a complete suspension rebuild, but I expected this from the start. I'll be doing some preventative maintenance on the cooling system and I'll get the air conditioning working too. Here's the list of work carried out and issues found by the specialist.Total bill was just over £200, so that brings my total spend on the car to date at a smidge over £300. That's going to change drastically when I sort the suspension out, Spyder Performance do a complete kit that I'm probably going to purchase. I won't see much change out of £2,000! And then there's the brake pipes, heat shield, undertrays, air con, cooling system.... Stay tuned for more updates!

If its styling fuses a little 6GT with a little 720S, I can't see it going far wrong.Building an SUV is a sad but perhaps necessary evil. Performance manufacturers should really look at a different set of priorities to luxury marques. A McLaren, Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche, or even Bentley SUV should be something that could conceivably win a race. Make the body low and wide, and if it has to be jacked up, make it jacked up for sand dunes and mud pits, not Kensington kerbs and speedbumps. Most importantly, make it weigh less! Else there's no S about it, it's just a big fat squishy UV.
Writing the title made me wonder how many rear engined coupes have existed. I got 911 (obviously), some Alpines, Delorean, Fiat / Abarth versions of the 850. There must be more. But this is none of those. Its Japanese, made in the '80s and sold here in reasonable numbers. But they are now firmly in the category of 'rare but nobody gives a st'. And only a handful remain. It's a car I've had a yearning to own and got outbid on one at auction many years ago. More recently I contacted a seller on FB, we agreed a price and then he blocked me...So I broke the first rule of car buying and bought one s

I'm debating what I do with a speedo conversion. Plus point with the Lockwood is you get mph and kph whereas converting it on the CAN leaves you with mph only. Or I could just leave it in Km. I'm fairly used to doing it in my head that way around. Of course, there was an incident in the Forester where I forgot it was converted and I took it up to an indicated 100 thinking 'this feels strangely fast'
