What a great result!
The rear mirror still isn't fitted...but we do have progress in more important areas.Firstly the freshly rebuilt heads returned having been hot tanked at pressure checked to 60psi.This time they looked like they had been rebuilt! With the 1.95" inlet valves still not being available (I managed to locate 7 in the USA which was one short of being useful), the later 2.08" valves were sourced and the heads machined to fit. Apparently, the drag racing boys have found that doing this adds nothing to performance, but whilst it isn't a speed mod, it does mean I have new inlet valves. At the same time, the heads were completely rebuilt to remove all signs of the shonky work that had been done previously. Time was spent getting the details right so I can be sure the heads are not likely to cause a problem again. Even though some parts could have been reused, they were replaced by items from tried and tested suppliers, so their provenance is known.Knowing that the base of the heads no longer had the profile of a mountain range, it was time to ensure the block was similarly flat. As the engine was not being removed from the car Neil spent rather longer that he would have liked with an oil stone and a flat edge, honing both banks of the block. The car really does look at home in Neil's workshop...In the meantime, Rock Auto had done their usual amazing delivery service and a complete gasket set and head bolt set had arrived from the States. It was time to put the engine back together. The first thing we noticed was that the complete gasket set did not include the massive valley gasket that sits between the heads. Whilst the one on the car was not old it had been doused in coolant several times and was looking rather less than new. Ordering through Rock Auto would have cost around £70 after shipping and import duty, for an item that costs $19.Someone suggested I try Topspeed Automotive not far away in Wellingborough. They are American parts specialists and had what I needed in stock.

Writing the title made me wonder how many rear engined coupes have existed. I got 911 (obviously), some Alpines, Delorean, Fiat / Abarth versions of the 850. There must be more. But this is none of those. Its Japanese, made in the '80s and sold here in reasonable numbers. But they are now firmly in the category of 'rare but nobody gives a st'. And only a handful remain. It's a car I've had a yearning to own and got outbid on one at auction many years ago. More recently I contacted a seller on FB, we agreed a price and then he blocked me...So I broke the first rule of car buying and bought one s

I'm debating what I do with a speedo conversion. Plus point with the Lockwood is you get mph and kph whereas converting it on the CAN leaves you with mph only. Or I could just leave it in Km. I'm fairly used to doing it in my head that way around. Of course, there was an incident in the Forester where I forgot it was converted and I took it up to an indicated 100 thinking 'this feels strangely fast'
