Why does the reverse gear in manual transmission cars sound different

처리 내용

In manual transmissions, the reverse gears use a different type of gear teeth than forward gears. Forward gears are helical gears, which have teeth that are pointed at an angle. When the gears rotate, most of the load is evenly spread due to the angles. Reverse gears are cut into spurs, which don't absorb the load quite so well. As a result, there is more of a whining noise. The reason reverse gears are spurs is because reverse requires an idler gear to prevent accidentally shifting into reverse while moving. This is what is known as the gears not being synchronized, and this is also why you cannot shift into reverse when you're moving. What you may find interesting is that my 1987 Ford F-150 4x4 makes this same sound when moving forward in low 1st gear. The 4 speed granny low first gear is also using this same technology as it's only designed for towing or going up or down really steep hills. I have a 2005 Camry that I don’t plan on driving much. First time I have had to consider time recommendations over mileage. Should all time constrained maintenance, such as changing your oil once every 6 months (even if you don’t go 5000 miles in that time) be strictly followed? Opinions seem to vary from person to person. I can see how if you just let your car sit, that it could cause some problems. But I figured if I start it monthly and get up to operating temperature, I should be ok? Moisture can find it’s way into the engine and transmission, bringing it up to operating temperature might

My wife’s car is a 2007 Corolla. She told me the car is making a noise that sounds like a shifting bag of rice. I rode in the car and we stopped at the end of the street and then started into a left-handed u-turn and it sounded to me like we ran over some light gravel/sand on the right-front, but we didn’t - that was the sound. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Happens when giving it gas while going into a sharp turn - either direction. She’s not sure that it happens 100% every time, but it does happen regularly. Hoping someone else here has experienced this sound before and can tell me what it is. Thank you

This is in regard to a 1993 Dodge Shadow with a 2.5L engine and 3-speed automatic transmission. When the engine is running, the transmission fluid leaks between the engine and transmission. Is there a replaceable seal, or does the torque converter itself need to be replaced? Once the motor and transmission are pulled, is it very difficult to remove and reinstall a torque converter onto a transmission? E.g. alignment.

WHEN ACCELERATING FROM DEAD STOP IN A RIGHT HAND TURN UP-HILL CAR IS SLOW TO MOVE FORWARD REQUIRING MORE PRESSURE ON GAS PEDAL, THEN TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO BE HUNTING FOR RIGHT GEAR CAUSING A JERKY MOTION.
