태양광 패널로 냉각하려면 전력이 문제입니다. 일반적인 자동차 에어컨은 1000~3000와트를 소비합니다. 1제곱미터의 태양전지는 약 150W의 전력을 생성합니다. 자동차 전체를 태양광 패널로 덮어도 완벽한 조건에서도 에어컨을 완전히 구동하기에 충분하지 않으며, 비용도 매우 비쌉니다. 선풍기는 훨씬 적은 전력(최대 몇백 와트)을 소비합니다. 최대 출력이 필요 없다면 태양광 패널만으로도 기술적으로 구동할 수 있습니다. 일부 자동차 제조사에서는 이미 이를 적용하고 있습니다. 예를 들어 일부 아우디 모델은 태양광 패널 선루프를 옵션으로 제공합니다. 자동차 시동이 꺼져 있을 때도 송풍기를 저속으로 작동시켜 공기 순환을 유지하고 실내 공기를 신선하게 보관합니다. 그 외의 다른 용도로는 태양광 패널이 의미 있는 효과를 낼 만큼 충분한 전력을 생성하지 못합니다.
