I went out with a young lady who behaved exactly like that when I was 25. I had my own car and she had hers but it was my job to look after both! After having to avert a mechanical disaster one too many times I told her straight that she was on her own for her car and that if she was worried about anything she should take it to her local garage (which was run by a friend of hers). Only took 3 weeks before I got a call about her being stranded after something had gone pop under the bonnet and progress was no longer an option.
