Interesting discussion and whilst occupant and pedestrian safety are important, for me it seems we have entered an arms race now and I dont know where it will end. Take the Gen2 Renault Megane for example. I seem to recall it was the first medium sized hatchback to get the 5 star N Cap rating in 2002 when launched. By modern standards one of these is fairly compact now, about the same size as modern Clio. Yet it was in its time a very safe car to travel in. Problem then was that SUVs got more and more popular and these clearly will do major damage to something like a Megane or a Focus. So owners of these said hatches, feeling vulnerable started moving into taller and more substantially sized crossovers to try feel safer and on we went and on we go, bigger and bigger, each generation. Yet even going back to the 1970s when if you believe some on here, "all cars were death traps", the reality is, from my circle of friends and family, only one perished in a vehicle related incident, he was knocked down and killed aged 10. None of my friends or family died in car accidents. I am not trying to sound trivial about an obvious important subject of road safety, just giving context that we really did not need to go on an arms race to own a 2.5 ton car just to survive the school run or equivalent..........
