With the benefit of 40+ years of hindsight, it was tired, rotten and driven by a lunatic. And yet…All these years later, I can still remember the battered red Lancia Fulvia Coupé that I would frequently see bombing around Prestatyn, my hometown. Its nose-down stance, the slightly other-worldly hum of its V4 engine, the sharp, crisp lines, the Cromadora alloys.(Insert comedy needle scratching across a record sound here)Those of you familiar with me from the Classic Cars & Yesterday’s Heroes thread may recall that I had a Triumph GT6 for a couple of years. While I loved it, I was finding it incr
Why do Italian car names sound so sexy? The Fulvia was named after the Via Fulvia – in turn named after Quintus Fulvius, who built it in 179BCE – which was a Roman road that ran from Piacenza to Rivoli, near Turin. The same naming convention brought us the Lancias Appia, Aurelia, Flaminia and Flavia. The British equivalent would probably be the Morris Newbury Bypass, Austin Mornington Crescent or Ford Heads of the Valleys.Buying an Italian car from an Italian was a lot of fun. Not only was I able to learn that it’s pronounced more like fool-vyah than full-veer as we Brits tend to say, but I also learned how Antonio came by the car.It was first registered in Palermo, Sicily. I haven’t been through and translated it all yet, but there’s a huge file of paperwork pertaining to its early life on the island. Most importantly, its original Palermo registration number is known: PA 393833. Antonio did confess that he tried to retain its plates but was unable to. I tasked my son, Theo, with researching and making a set of replicas as I am unwilling to spend what online suppliers are asking for “genuine” replicas. He's studying to be a graphic designer and I think he did a great job:We’ll use these for car shows etc, just to add interest.By 2020 the car had made its way to Tuscany, from where Antonio bought it during lockdown. He arranged a road trip once the travel ban was lifted. He went over to Italy with a mate and drove the car back, across the Alps. His mate has no mechanical sympathy and cooked the brakes, but I took heart from the fact that they had no other mechanical dramas.Back in the UK, the DVLA registration process was completed and the car entered circulation, albeit infrequently. Changes to the seller’s domestic arrangements meant the loss of garage space, hence the sale. Easter came and went, while I organised agreed-value insurance and waited for the owner of the premises where the car was stored to get back from Poland. I’d paid for the car in full, against m

If its styling fuses a little 6GT with a little 720S, I can't see it going far wrong.Building an SUV is a sad but perhaps necessary evil. Performance manufacturers should really look at a different set of priorities to luxury marques. A McLaren, Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche, or even Bentley SUV should be something that could conceivably win a race. Make the body low and wide, and if it has to be jacked up, make it jacked up for sand dunes and mud pits, not Kensington kerbs and speedbumps. Most importantly, make it weigh less! Else there's no S about it, it's just a big fat squishy UV.
Writing the title made me wonder how many rear engined coupes have existed. I got 911 (obviously), some Alpines, Delorean, Fiat / Abarth versions of the 850. There must be more. But this is none of those. Its Japanese, made in the '80s and sold here in reasonable numbers. But they are now firmly in the category of 'rare but nobody gives a st'. And only a handful remain. It's a car I've had a yearning to own and got outbid on one at auction many years ago. More recently I contacted a seller on FB, we agreed a price and then he blocked me...So I broke the first rule of car buying and bought one s

Flyingakite said: Yes all spec details.Again JDM cars are Japanese domestic market specific sold and built cars . This car was sold all over the world in different specifications that's the only difference. People seem to think JDM is for any car from Japan which it isn't.You're entirely incorrect here. JDM can be applied to any car car destined for the Japanese domestic market.Yes, people incorrectly say 'JDM' when it's a Civic originally sold in Peterborough, but this is a Japanese only model originally sold domestically in Japan.

I appreciate that this isn t a very Pistonheads kind of vehicle but I thought it might be of a little bit of interest to some. Despite the love I had for my Fiat Panda 4x4 Cross winter car, I ve always really hankered after one of the latest Suzuki Jimny s but never actually did it whilst they were officially available in the UK. However, I recently got the chance to pick up a brand new import and decided to go for it.The car is exactly as it left the factory but I did get the dealer to upgrade the tyres for me as I d read some pretty poor (snow) reviews about the Dunlop Grand Trek tyres that

My A tech who is 55 years old had a cough one day and medically retired the next. He has a particularly nasty cancer. I'm just lost what to do. He's not only a good employee but a good friend. Been with me 8 years. I have always been lucky with finding techs...
